Do You Need a Destination Wedding Travel Agent?
Perhaps you’ve looked until your dizzy online, came up with a million resort and venue options, & are now even more overwhelmed than when you first started. Maybe you are so busy in your daily life that you just want someone to swoop in and help.
Maybe you’re wondering… “What does a destination wedding travel agent even do?”
Let’s break it down!
Should You DIY Your Destination Wedding?
The honest answer? You can. If you love research, have plenty of free time, and don’t mind managing travel logistics for 50+ guests, you could plan it yourself. But ask yourself this: do you really want to spend your engagement juggling contracts, room blocks, flight schedules, and guest questions… when you could be enjoying the fun parts? A destination wedding specialist can take this (and more!) off your shoulders.
Something else to consider… if you haven’t been to the destination, resort, or venue you are envisioning your dream destination wedding at, how do you know if you will even like it? Will the photos posted online really look like what you will see in person? At Design Our Travel we pride ourselves in visiting the destinations, resorts, and venues we offer to our couples AND we take the time to meet with the on-site wedding teams in person. Having someone with that type of experience in their pocket is priceless.
We have taken the time and funds to be certified as a Destination Wedding Specialist, with countless hours of training both virtually and in the destinations we sell in Mexico and the Caribbean.
What Does a Destination Wedding Travel Agent Do?
Planning a destination wedding in Mexico or the Caribbean at an all-inclusive resort is very different from booking a simple vacation. As certified destination wedding specialists, we handle:
- Resort & Venue Expertise. We’ve toured the resorts, walked the beaches, and built personal connections with wedding teams. We can guide you to the best resorts (and steer you away from the ones that don’t live up to the hype – if we wouldn’t go back for a personal vacation of our own we aren’t going to send our couples there).
- Guest Travel Management. Instead of answering a million texts about passports, kids’ clubs, room options, or how to book, your guests contact us directly. For some of your guests this may be their first time traveling out of the country.Trust us on this one, this is huge. Aunt Sally will have so many questions.
- Faster Answers & Added Perks. Thanks to strong relationships with resort wedding coordinators, we can often secure perks, upgrades, or quick answers that couples can’t get on their own. It’s no secret, “on island time” is a REAL thing. Without having a professional backing you, response times from resorts and venues can take weeks.
- Stress-Free Planning. You get to enjoy your engagement and let us manage the moving parts behind the scenes. In the travel industry, destination wedding specialists are known for embracing the chaos – we have built systems in place to put your guests minds at ease. Allowing you to fully sink in to what having a destination wedding is all about – you may be wanting a destination wedding to get away from all the structured planning and stress that comes with having a wedding in your hometown.
How to Find the Right Destination Wedding Travel Agent
Not all travel agents specialize in weddings, and not all of them work full-time. There are so many travel agents out there offering destination wedding services. We aren’t all created equal. To make sure you find the right partner, here are a few tips:
- Interview Them. Ask how many destination weddings they’ve planned, what regions they specialize in, and how they communicate with couples.
- Do Your Research. Look at their social media —do they actually showcase real weddings in Mexico and the Caribbean? Do they show previous bride reviews? Where have they traveled? Look at their website – do they have one? Is their website organized and aesthetically pleasing? When you have a website, this is esentially your showcase to the world – if it’s chaotic, chances are their desks are too.
- Look for a Personality Match. You’ll be working closely with this person, so make sure it feels like a good fit. Interview a handful that you feel a vibe with – remember you usually are going to be working with this person for a year or more!

How to Plan Your Destination With Design Our Travel Step by Step
Here’s the process I take couples through when planning a destination wedding:
Step 1: Initial Consultation
We’ll hop on a complimentary call to talk about your vision, guest count, travel dates, and any destinations you’ve already considered. You don’t need to have all the answers—that’s our job.
Step 2: Resort Shortlist
Based on your budget, style, and guest needs, we’ll put together a curated list of all-inclusive resorts in Mexico and the Caribbean that fit your vision. We’ll also confirm that your wedding date and venue options are available.
Step 3: Compare & Choose
Within a few days, we’ll present you with detailed proposals—complete with pricing, packages, photos, and perks. We’ll go through them together so you feel confident making the decision.
Step 4: Secure Your Wedding Date & Room Block
Once you choose your dream resort, we’ll handle contracts for your wedding and guest rooms. With a contracted group, your guests lock in discounted rates, your rooms are guaranteed, and you’ll often get perks like free nights or room upgrades. Yay!
Step 5: Guest Travel Coordination
This is where couples say we save them the most stress. We’ll create a custom wedding website that includes booking links for your guests, handle deposits, manage payments, and be the main contact for your guests. You won’t have to answer endless questions about flights or passports—we’ll take care of it. Trust us on this one.
Step 6: Destination Wedding Planning
Depending on the type of service you book with us, we can be as hands off or hands on as you want. We offer packages from room block management to onsite day of coordination for your wedding day. As your wedding approaches, We’ll keep you updated on guest arrivals, room lists, and flight info. Want to add a welcome cocktail, group excursion, or spa day? We can help plan it all.
Step 7: Optional On-Site Support
For larger groups, some couples like to have us on-site to make sure everything runs seamlessly. This extra layer of support ensures you can truly relax and soak in your wedding day.

Why Hiring a Travel Specialist Matters
Planning a wedding is already a huge task—adding international travel for all your guests can easily double the stress. By working with Design Our Travel, you gain a partner who knows the ins and outs of all-inclusive resorts, has real experience with weddings in Mexico and the Caribbean, and is invested in making your big day as smooth and unforgettable as possible.
So while you could plan your destination wedding solo, the better question is: why would you want to?
